Questions - John 8:37-59 & Ezk 19-20

Purpose

“And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” (Acts 2:42)

As explained in Acts 2:46–47:
“And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart… And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.”

And commanded in Titus 2:2-8:
“2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.
6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.”

HCF Vision

We believe simple, relational gatherings are the heartbeat of biblical discipleship. These meetings are fulfilling what is described in Titus 2 / Acts 2:42, and are designed to be natural extensions of everyday life — not another program, but a return to how the early church “did life” together.
Scriptural Core Elements of Gatherings:
  • Breaking of Bread – Enjoy a meal or refreshments together
  • Fellowship – Spiritual conversation and authentic sharing
  • Apostles’ Doctrine – Discuss God’s Word and how it applies to real life
  • Prayer – Pray for one another and for the lost
These gatherings can be used in one-on-one (Titus 2), small group, or family settings (Acts 2:46). Keep them simple, joyful, and reproducible so anyone can host them.

Goal

To Join Jesus in the Great Commission of:

WIN a person to Jesus → DISCIPLE a person in Jesus → SEND a person in Jesus

Meeting Guide

WIN a person to Jesus – (Mark 16:15)

  • Have you had the privilege to share and show the gospel to anyone recently?
    • Explain what happened and how we can pray for that person.

DISCIPLE a person in Jesus – (Matthew 28:19-20) (Acts 2:42)

1. Apostles’ Doctrine (Word)

  • Through the Bible Reading (John 8:31) – Do you have any thoughts or questions on your “Through the Bible” reading plan?

  • Application Questions from Bible Studies (Wednesday)

Wednesday Bible Study Date: Oct 28, 2026
Bible Study Theme: Ezekiel 19-20
  1.  In (Ezekiel 20) in Vs 9,14, 22 & 44 God makes it clear that the reason for His faithful grace and mercy upon His people is for His name sake.  How comforting, encouraging and humbling is this to you personally?  How does it encourage you to trust Him more?  Explain.

  • Application Questions from Bible Studies (Sunday)

Sunday Bible Study Date:  Nov 1, 2026
Bible Study Theme: (John 8:37-59) Knowing Jesus as Liberator Part 3.

  1. In (Vs 37-38) we looked at the fact that the enslaver of our souls(Satan) rejects the word of God.  What are some subtle ways that you yourself, or us as a church may be tempted to reject the Word of God as it is?  Consider the three Scriptures we looked into (Gen 3:1, Mark 7:13, 2 Tim 4:3) and give examples of your answer?

  2. In (Vs 39-44a) we saw that Satan is a killer and a murderer.  We discussed why and what exactly he is seeking to kill in that he hates the image of God.  If this is true, what should be our aim and purpose in life according to God’s word (Romans 8:28-29, 2Cor 3:18) and how can we get side tracked from that goal (Romans 3:23)?  Explain.

  1. In (Vs 44b-47) we see that Satan is a liar.  Discuss the statement in regards to (2 Corinthians 11:1-3, John 8:36) that “all of Satan's lies serve one purpose, and that is to keep us from Jesus who sets us free”.  Come up with lies that you have believed, and lies that you could see Satan using to keep people from coming to Jesus and experiencing His freedom, and thus staying in Satan's control.

  2. In (Vs 51) specifically Jesus offers liberation from seeing death.  That is eternal death ultimately.  Knowing that we are liberated from the fear of death (Hebrews 2:15), how does this affect the way that we should live our lives for Christ?  What would you do for Christ if the fear of death was not a factor?  Explain.
  • Memory Verse (Psalm 119:11):
(John 8:44) “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

2. Fellowship / Breaking of Bread (1 John 1:3-10, James 5:13-16)

  • Are you suffering?
  • Do you have any praise to be cheerful about?
  • Do you have any sickness to pray for healing?
  • Do you have any sin to confess?

3. Prayer – (1 Peter 5:7, Gal 6:2)

  • Share how God has answered prayers from our previous gathering and give thanks for His faithfulness. (Review what was written from the previous meeting)
  • Bear one another’s burdens and pray for one another (write them down)

Send a person for Jesus – (Acts 1:8)

  1. What good works (service in the body of Christ) do you see God preparing you to walk in or have you walked in recently? (Ephesians 2:10) Share and pray about it.

  1. Do you see the Lord opening a door for you to share the gospel this week?  (Revelation 3:8)  Share and pray about it.
